Government officials in South Sudan are working diligently to secure funding for important infrastructure projects, particularly in the realm of road construction. The aim is to improve connectivity across the nation and drive economic expansion.

The authorities have underlined that the development of new road networks will increase access to markets, reduce transportation costs, promote trade, and fortify regional partnerships. Furthermore, enhanced roads are anticipated to facilitate the provision of vital services such as healthcare and education in remote regions.

This renewed push follows a recent meeting between Vice President Dr Benjamin Bol Mel and Vice President Taban Deng Gai, who oversees the Infrastructure Cluster. The leaders assessed the progress of current projects, pinpointed crucial requirements, and devised strategies to overcome setbacks.

River transport emerged as a key focus during discussions, with both leaders acknowledging hindrances like unlawful charges and physical barriers along waterways. They have pledged to tackle these obstacles to enhance river transport, which can lead to cost reductions for traders and improved services for communities in proximity to major rivers.

At the meeting, the leaders stressed the significance of close collaboration among government entities, development partners, and the private sector. They underscored the urgency of expediting sustainable infrastructure projects to foster economic growth in the country and generate more opportunities for local populations.
