(JUBA) – The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation this week held an induction meeting for the new minister, Hon. James Makuach, at Palm Africa Hotel in Juba. The session brought together senior managers of the ministry along with project teams from the Resilient Community Resource Project (RCRP) and the National Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Project (NWASH).
The meeting served as a briefing for the minister on the progress of projects, current challenges, and the way forward. Acting Undersecretary, Engineer Makuach Ador, placed emphasis on teamwork, accountability, and stronger reporting systems within the ministry’s operations.
Project teams outlined the current status of RCRP and NWASH, presenting updates on progress while noting difficulties with procurement, finance, and technical implementation. These projects are central to protecting communities from the growing threats of floods and drought, while also improving access to safe water and sanitation across the country.
Minister Makuach actively engaged in the discussions, raising the importance of flood control, inclusion of all communities, and water provision for livestock, which is a major concern for rural economies in South Sudan.
In his closing remarks, the minister stressed the need for improved accountability, stronger coordination, and a culture of teamwork across the ministry and its projects. He pledged to accelerate the implementation of flood resilience measures and water projects that directly impact communities and economic stability.
According to a press statement from the Ministry, the meeting is seen as a signal of the new minister’s commitment to strengthening collaboration between the ministry’s leadership and its development partners. It comes at a time when South Sudan continues to face increasing climate related challenges, with flooding and drought threatening both livelihoods and infrastructure.
