(AWEIL EAST COUNTY) – A woman is in custody in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State after allegedly stabbing her co-wife to death in a family dispute, according to local officials. The incident took place in Rum-rol, Madhol Payam, Aweil East County, and has left the community in shock.

The deceased has been identified as Abany Yor Kiir, while the suspect is named as Abuk Deng. Both women were reportedly married to the same man, a wounded veteran named Majoth Kiir.

Local youth chairperson Garang Lual described the killing as a “despicable act,” saying the two women had been in conflict before the attack. He explained that the suspect stabbed Abany in the stomach, killing her instantly. Abany leaves behind a baby of about one and a half years, whom she had been breastfeeding at the time of her death.

“The suspect, Abuk Deng, attacked Abany on Thursday morning. She died on the spot. This incident has shaken the entire community,” Lual said. He added that Abany’s burial took place at her home, while Abuk was transferred to Wanyjok, the county headquarters, where she is being detained as investigations continue. Authorities confirmed that the suspect will appear in court soon.

Madhol Payam administrator Akech Tong gave further details, saying the attack happened at around 9:00 p.m. on Thursday. He stated that the suspect lured the deceased outside her house under the pretext of holding a discussion before stabbing her at the doorway.

“Yes, it is true. The deceased, Abany Yor Kiir, was killed in Rum-rol on Thursday night. She died instantly,” Tong said. “We dispatched police forces to calm the situation, and the suspect is now under investigation in Wanyjok.”
