(MOSCOW) – A member of Russia’s State Duma and former military commander Andrey Gurulyov has claimed that Russia could end its war against Ukraine “in 30 minutes” through the use of nuclear weapons, during an appearance on a state radio programme. His remarks were made on the broadcast “In War as in War,” hosted by commentator Vladislav Shurygin. The programme regularly features discussion supportive of Russia’s military aggression and promotes the government’s messaging on the conflict.

During the discussion, Gurulyov referred to a recently tested Russian cruise missile which, according to him, is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead of up to one megaton. He stated that such a payload could “erase an entire US state,” suggesting that the missile could travel for long periods, repositioning before striking targets from unexpected directions. He gave an example of it potentially circling near Antarctica before approaching targets from the south, adding that US border controls would not detect it.

Gurulyov presented nuclear capability as a decisive instrument in Russia’s war against Ukraine. He claimed that the conflict could be concluded rapidly if Russia chose to use strategic nuclear weapons, declaring that afterward there would be “no one left to negotiate with.” His statements dismiss international concerns about nuclear escalation, and he criticised those in Russia who warn of global consequences, describing them as unqualified and overly cautious.

He further argued that Russia would not become isolated internationally if it escalated to nuclear use, claiming that other nations would seek to align with Russia out of respect for strength. This position contradicts global diplomatic responses so far, where Russia has already faced sanctions, international court proceedings, and declining political standing due to its invasion of Ukraine.

Gurulyov also criticised United States President Donald Trump, describing him as either “too weak” or unwilling to act in global affairs. He suggested that the United States was no longer capable of imposing its will internationally, framing this as evidence of the emergence of a so called “multipolar world.” Such rhetoric mirrors the narrative promoted by Russia’s dictator Vladimir Putin, who has frequently claimed that Russia is forging a new global power balance.

Gurulyov stated that Russia faces an extended period of conflict and instability, which he described as lasting approximately twenty years, during which the country must secure what he called “sovereignty” and position itself as a major power. He referred to this envisioned future state as “Great Russia,” implying a role as one of several global centres of influence.

The programme concluded with the host praising Gurulyov as a “trusted military figure,” and indicated that he would be invited again. The broadcast did not present alternative perspectives, expert analysis, or any challenge to the claims made regarding nuclear warfare or international consequences.
