(DEBALTSEVE, DONETSK OBLAST) – Ukrainian forces carried out a successful strike on a Russian ammunition depot near the occupied town of Debaltseve in eastern Ukraine, triggering a prolonged series of secondary explosions that suggested the destruction of a large stockpile of military supplies.
Videos shared on social media and analysed by open source researchers showed repeated detonations and fireballs consistent with artillery shells and possibly rockets or missiles stored at the site. The sustained explosions, often described as a cook off, indicated that a significant quantity of ammunition was present and was destroyed during the strike.
According to analysts reviewing the footage, the depot appeared to be located within a cluster of warehouse style buildings close to railway tracks near a major rail hub in the Debaltseve area. While the exact warehouse hit could not be confirmed, the scale of the fire and the duration of the explosions suggested that either a large facility or several adjacent structures were affected.
Open source mapping placed the site just under 50 kilometres from the front lines, making it a key logistics point for Russian forces operating on the eastern front. The depot was likely used to support operations along the Pokrovsk axis, which has been identified by military observers as one of the main priorities for Russian attacks in recent months.
The method used in the strike has not been officially confirmed by Ukrainian authorities. Given the distance from the front lines, standard artillery is considered unlikely. Possible weapons include HIMARS rockets, long range drones, jet powered strike drones, or air launched or ground launched missiles. Some analysts suggested that jet powered drones or a missile system may have been used, as these would have greater ability to penetrate reinforced warehouse roofs and trigger internal detonations.
There was no immediate comment from Russian authorities on the incident. Moscow has previously downplayed or denied similar strikes, even when visual evidence has been widely circulated. The destruction of ammunition stocks, however, represents a tangible loss that can have direct effects on battlefield capabilities.
Ukraine has increasingly relied on a mix of domestically produced drones and Western supplied precision weapons to hit high value targets. These operations form part of a broader strategy to offset Russia’s numerical advantages by degrading supply chains and command structures.
Strikes on depots, rail hubs and logistics centres remain a central element of Ukraine’s defensive and counteroffensive efforts against the invading forces led by the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
