(MICHURINSK, TAMBOV REGION) – A defence industry facility in central Russia was hit overnight on Wednesday, according to local reports and Ukrainian media sources.

The Progress plant in the city of Michurinsk, in the Tambov region, was struck during the night of February 12, Ukraine’s UNN news agency reported, citing local social media pages.

Residents published videos and photographs showing smoke and damage near the industrial site. The reports said Russian air defence systems were activated during the incident.

Local sources also said that Russian air defence fire struck a nearby college building, causing additional damage. There were no immediate official statements on casualties.

The regional authorities have not provided detailed information about the incident. Russian state media made no immediate reference to the reported strike.

The Progress plant is a major manufacturer of navigation and control equipment for military and civilian aircraft. It produces gyroscopic systems, autopilots, course indicators and angular velocity sensors.

These components are used in aeroplanes, helicopters and missile systems and play a key role in flight control and targeting. The plant works closely with Russia’s defence industry.

Videos shared online described the incident as a continuation of what users called the “decommunisation” of the facility, a term used by Ukrainian commentators to describe strikes on former Soviet era military infrastructure.

The reported attack comes as Ukraine continues to target Russian military and industrial sites linked to the war effort. Kyiv says such operations are aimed at reducing Moscow’s capacity to wage war.

Russia has faced a growing number of drone and missile attacks on facilities far from the front line, including fuel depots, arms factories and transport hubs.

Earlier this year, Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed strikes on a drone manufacturing facility in Taganrog and on military targets in Russian occupied territories.
