(PALM BEACH, FLORIDA) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in the United States for talks with Donald Trump and his representatives as Russia continued heavy missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities, highlighting the sharp contrast between battlefield realities and diplomatic engagement.
Zelenskyy travelled to Florida to meet Trump at his Mar a Lago residence, seeking to reinforce Ukraine’s position as it faces continued air assaults from Russia. Ukrainian officials said the attacks, which reportedly lasted several hours, underlined Moscow’s lack of interest in ending the war through negotiations.
The arrival drew attention after no senior figures from Trump’s team were seen formally greeting Zelensky at the airport. Ukrainian officials present welcomed him, with Ukrainian symbols visible among his delegation. The low key reception prompted discussion among observers about the current state of relations between Trump and Kyiv.
Trump has previously portrayed himself as a potential mediator in the conflict, but critics argue that repeated meetings with Zelensky over the past year have produced little tangible progress towards peace. Russia, led by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, continues to pursue military gains in Ukraine, while rejecting proposals that would respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Before meeting Zelensky, Trump confirmed that he had spoken by telephone with Putin, describing the conversation as productive. The timing of the call raised questions among analysts about Trump’s priorities, particularly as Russian forces continue to strike residential areas in Kyiv and other cities.
Ukrainian officials have repeatedly stressed that Russia’s campaign targets civilians as well as infrastructure, with women and children among those killed in recent attacks. Churches and apartment buildings have also been damaged, reinforcing Ukraine’s view that Moscow is using terror tactics to pressure the population.
Despite ongoing diplomatic contacts, there has been no indication that Russia is willing to compromise. Ukrainian officials say Moscow is using talks to buy time while continuing its offensive, a position shared by several Western analysts.
The meeting between Zelensky and Trump was still ongoing at the time of reporting. However, expectations for a breakthrough remained low, as Ukraine continues to seek consistent and reliable international support while facing an opponent determined to impose its will by force.
