(DAVOS, SWITZERLAND) – President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Switzerland for high level peace negotiations amidst reports that Moscow is making incremental gains on the battlefield. The visit coincided with an appearance by Donald Trump at the World Economic Forum, where the former American leader suggested that a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine was close to being achieved. Although the two men have had a historically fractious relationship, their recent meeting was described by Mr Trump as positive.

Following the encounter, President Zelenskyy delivered a pointed address to delegates in Davos. He launched a severe critique of his European allies, accusing them of failing to demonstrate sufficient strength on the international stage. He described Europe as a fragmented collection of small and middle powers rather than a unified global force. President Zelenskyy argued that European leaders appear hesitant and are focused on attempting to persuade the American president to alter his stance instead of taking a definitive lead in defending global freedom.

The Ukrainian leader expressed frustration with what he characterised as a repetitive cycle of inaction. He specifically highlighted several areas where he believes European indecision has hindered the effort to restrain Russian aggression. These include the failure to seize Russian oil tankers, a reluctance to utilise frozen Russian assets to fund the Ukrainian defence, and an inability to prevent the Russian dictator from obtaining missile components, some of which originate within Europe.

In response to these concerns, some European nations have begun to take limited action. France recently intercepted a tanker suspected of being part of the Russian shadow fleet used to circumvent oil sanctions. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue elsewhere as the Russian dictator hosted representatives in Moscow to discuss post war arrangements. While reports suggest the United States has agreed in principle to provide security protections for Ukraine after the conflict, the specific details remain undisclosed and contingent upon a lasting peace.

The week in Davos was further complicated by Donald Trump’s rhetoric regarding NATO and its members. He suggested that European allies might not support the United States if called upon, despite the fact that Article 5 was invoked following the September 11 attacks. Mr Trump further claimed that European and British troops in Afghanistan remained away from the front lines. These comments have sparked significant anger, particularly in the United Kingdom, where veterans noted that 457 British personnel died in the conflict. Critics have described the remarks as a deep insult to the memory of those who served.
