(KYIV) – United States President Donald Trump could end American support for Ukraine, including the sale of weapons, if European countries respond with economic sanctions linked to Greenland, according to a report by The New York Times cited by Ukrainian outlet UNN.

The report says the warning reflects a broader shift in United States policy messaging that places pressure on European governments over their dependence on Washington for security. United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was quoted as saying that European countries must recognise that their security continues to rely heavily on the United States.

Bessent suggested that a withdrawal of American support would have severe consequences for Ukraine, indicating that the situation could deteriorate rapidly if military and financial assistance were halted. His remarks underline the scale of Ukraine’s reliance on United States backing as the war continues.

The reported position has raised concern in Kyiv, where President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is closely watching developments. According to the report, Zelenskyy is worried that international attention is shifting away from Ukraine towards disputes surrounding Greenland and President Trump’s public statements about his interest in taking control of the island.

Zelenskyy has also addressed claims circulating in some media about discussions involving Ukraine and Greenland. He stated that Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had not contacted him regarding any proposal to send Ukrainian troops to Greenland, distancing Kyiv from speculation about military involvement in the Arctic territory.

The uncertainty comes amid wider questions about the future of Western support for Ukraine and the impact of United States domestic and foreign policy priorities. While some analysts believe that disagreements over Greenland have complicated discussions on longer term arrangements for post war support to Ukraine, others argue that such plans are unlikely to be abandoned permanently.
