(KYIV) – The Kremlin has intensified its rhetoric against NATO leadership following a high level visit to the Ukrainian capital by Mark Rutte. During a broadcast of the state media programme “The Evening with Vladimir Solovyov,” the host questioned how the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation Secretary General was able to deliver a speech in Kyiv despite recent Russian strikes on the Ukrainian energy grid.

The Russian dictator, Vladimir Putin, has overseen a persistent campaign against civilian infrastructure, which Solovyov defended by stating that international accusations of war crimes are irrelevant to Moscow. The broadcaster dismissed the “squeals” of the Ukrainian people and suggested that the Russian military should focus on destroying the political heart of Kyiv. He argued that whether Russia is blamed for destroying the energy sector or the military industrial complex, the diplomatic consequences remain unchanged.

During his visit, Mr Rutte offered a message of resilience to the Ukrainian people, acknowledging the hardships of the winter while promising that “spring will come.” Solovyov responded to these remarks with personal vitriol, attempting to link the NATO chief to the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. The host questioned if Mr Rutte was “too insignificant” to have been invited to Epstein’s island, using the baseless insinuation to dismiss the diplomat’s standing.

The broadcast turned increasingly violent as Solovyov cited State Duma Deputy Pyotr Tolstoy, who previously claimed that Russian forces would “kill everyone” if NATO troops were deployed to Ukraine. Solovyov asked if Mr Rutte intended to join such a contingent, remarking that flowers might grow on his grave if it could even be found. These threats come amidst growing scepticism regarding future Western support, particularly with the unpredictability of the United States political landscape under Donald Trump, whose past rhetoric has frequently unsettled European allies.

The final segment of the programme featured a bizarre fixation on sanitation. Solovyov taunted the residents of Kyiv, Lviv, and Dnipro over the lack of working facilities due to power outages. He referenced previous Ukrainian criticisms of rural Russian infrastructure, mockingly suggesting that Ukraine has now become the “country of the outhouse.” The host concluded by telling former Ukrainian attorney Vasyl Vakarov that the Ukrainian nation has “flushed its political future down the toilet,” asserting that the state has failed its primary functions.
