(MOSCOW) – The Russian media landscape has experienced a sharp shift in narrative following the detention of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, by United States Special Forces. Sergey Karnaukhov, a prominent Russian broadcaster and known associate of the Kremlin’s propaganda apparatus, has struggled to reconcile his previous assertions of Russian military omnipotence with the current reality of the Maduro administration’s collapse.
In broadcasts leading up to the intervention, Karnaukhov frequently assured his audience that Venezuela remained a fortress of Russian influence. He claimed that the strategic decision by the Venezuelan leadership to align with the Russian dictator had rendered the country “untouchable”. Karnaukhov asserted that Russian military intelligence and personnel, seasoned by the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, had implemented “fantastic” and “brilliant” defensive measures that would lead to the immediate destruction of any approaching American fleet.
However, as footage emerged of Maduro in US custody, Karnaukhov’s rhetoric shifted toward a more sombre and critical assessment of his former allies. On his radio programme, “Karnaukhov’s Labyrinth”, the host noted that the captured leader “hardly looks like a head of state anymore” and described the regime as having been “deflated”. He further questioned the strength of other Moscow-aligned figures, drawing disparaging comparisons between the fall of Maduro and the previous exits of Viktor Yanukovych in Ukraine and Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
Karnaukhov appeared to blame the failure on the personal weaknesses of these leaders rather than the inadequacy of Russian support. He specifically criticised Yanukovych for failing to show “manly will” and accused him of allowing corruption to hollow out the state. This change in tone suggests a broader attempt by Kremlin-aligned media to distance the Russian dictator from the humiliating loss of a key strategic partner in the Western Hemisphere.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has officially condemned the American operation, describing it as “armed aggression” and an “unacceptable encroachment on sovereignty”. Despite these declarations, the Kremlin has faced criticism for its inability to protect its partners. Analysts note that while the Russian dictator continues to invest heavily in the war in Ukraine, Russia’s ability to project power abroad is being systematically eroded.
