(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – King Charles III has urged the United States Congress to maintain unwavering support for Ukraine, framing the commitment as essential to securing a just and lasting peace. The British monarch delivered his remarks during a formal address, as reported by Sky News.
The King told legislators that Ukraine requires steadfast backing in its defence against Russia’s full scale invasion, a war that began in 2022. He noted the United Kingdom has actively supported Ukraine and its people since the conflict commenced.
The appeal comes amid a reported shift in American foreign policy. The United States, which served as Ukraine’s primary military sponsor for years, sought to reduce its direct involvement and financial support under the administration of Donald Trump. The former administration prioritised other global conflicts, leaving Ukraine’s future security assistance in doubt.
King Charles invoked the historical unity between the two nations, specifically referencing the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York. He stated that Great Britain and the United States were “united in the face of terror” and “responded to the call together—as our nations have done for more than a century, side by side.”
“Today, the same unwavering resolve is needed to protect Ukraine and its most courageous people. It is necessary to ensure a truly just and lasting peace,” Charles said.
