(STARAYA RUSSA, NOVGOROD OBLAST) – Satellite imagery indicates that a recent Ukrainian strike hit the 123rd Aircraft Repair Plant at Staraya Russa airbase in Russia’s Novgorod region, with three direct impacts recorded on a hangar used for servicing military aircraft.
The facility is known to conduct maintenance and repairs on Russian aircraft and is considered a significant component of Russia’s aviation support infrastructure.
Initial reports suggest the strike was carried out by drones, although the exact systems used have not been officially confirmed. Imagery shows three separate impacts penetrating the roof of a hangar, with explosions occurring inside the structure.
The pattern of damage has led to some uncertainty over the type of weapon employed. The limited external destruction appears inconsistent with heavier missile systems such as Storm Shadow or Neptune, which typically produce more extensive structural damage.
Analysts have suggested the possibility that hybrid drone missile systems were used, capable of penetrating structures before detonating with a smaller payload. The impacts appear to have breached the roof before exploding within the building, likely causing damage to equipment or assets stored inside.
There is no confirmed information on whether aircraft were present in the hangar at the time of the strike. The facility primarily services Il 76 transport aircraft, but reports indicate that the airbase has also housed decommissioned A 50 airborne early warning aircraft without radar domes.
Maintenance of operational A 50 aircraft has historically been conducted at Taganrog airbase, which has previously been targeted and reportedly rendered inoperative. This has raised the possibility that Russia may be attempting to shift repair work to alternative facilities such as Staraya Russa.
Russia’s A 50 fleet has sustained significant attrition, with multiple aircraft reportedly destroyed or damaged in recent months. This has increased the strategic importance of remaining assets and any facilities capable of maintaining or restoring them.
Given the precision of the strike on a specific hangar, analysts assess that Ukrainian forces likely intended to target a high value asset or critical infrastructure within the facility. However, confirmation of the strike’s exact impact remains pending.
This appears to be the first recorded strike on Staraya Russa airbase. The location of the facility some 640 km from the Ukrainian border. also suggests a long range strike capability was employed.
Further details are expected as additional information becomes available.
