(YEKATERINBURG, RUSSIA) – Long range Ukrainian strike drones have successfully targeted the industrial centres of Yekaterinburg and Chelyabinsk in the Urals for the first time. The operation represents a significant expansion of Kyiv’s reach, with unmanned aerial vehicles travelling approximately 1,800 to 2,000 kilometres from the Ukrainian border to strike deep within Russian territory.
The regional governors, Denis Pasler of Sverdlovsk and Alexei Teksler of Chelyabinsk, confirmed the arrivals. These cities, located behind the Ural Mountains, have historically served as the Russian Federation’s secure rear for military production. For over a century, including during the first and second world wars, Moscow relocated critical government and military facilities to this region, considering it beyond the reach of conventional weaponry.
The drones remained undetected by Russian air defence systems, exposing significant vulnerabilities in the Kremlin’s domestic security apparatus. In 2025, Ukrainian operations began to dominate the skies over European Russia, resulting in the destruction of military sites and the cancellation of thousands of civilian flights. This latest escalation indicates that Kyiv now possesses the capability to project power into the Asian portion of the Russian Federation.
Public sentiment in the affected regions appears increasingly volatile. Local residents expressed anger and demotivation following the explosions, citing a total absence of communication from the Kremlin. This silence follows a established pattern where the Russian dictator, Vladimir Putin, avoids public comment during moments of military failure.
The strike further complicates the strategic outlook for the Russian leadership. Former proposals by officials such as Sergei Shoigu to relocate military assets deeper behind the Urals now appear obsolete. As the Russian oil and gas industry continues to suffer from sustained pressure, the cost of defending such vast distances increases.
Ukraine continues to develop independent weaponry, including ballistic missiles, to counter the perceived indecisiveness of some Western administrations. Analysts suggest that the effective use of inexpensive drone technology against high value strategic targets is fundamentally altering 21st century warfare. By successfully striking targets in the Asian part of the Russian Federation, Ukraine has effectively neutralised the traditional Russian defensive strategy of relying on geographic depth and the natural barrier of the Ural Mountains.
