(BELGOROD REGION, RUSSIA) – Ukrainian F-16 fighter jets have conducted an airstrike on an ammunition storage facility and strongpoint in Russia’s Belgorod region, delivering a precise hit just across the shared border.
Footage released on 1 May 2026 shows two bombs striking a building in the settlement of just across the Russian border with notable accuracy. The first munition scored a direct hit, producing a substantial blast, followed by a second strike on the same target. Initial assessments questioned whether the second explosion was a secondary detonation of stored ammunition, but further review of the footage confirmed it was a separate bomb impact.
Ukraine’s military described the target as an ammunition storage point and fortified position supporting Russian operations in the adjacent Sumy region of Ukraine. Both bombs struck the building directly, with analysts suggesting the munitions used were likely Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs) or AASM Hammer precision guided bombs, both of which are compatible with Ukrainian F-16 platforms.
The aircraft itself is not visible in the footage, meaning independent verification of the specific jet type remains unconfirmed. Geolocation of the strike was conducted by open source researcher Alex Bax, placing the impact at the identified building in Belgorod region.
The targeted site sits close to the border with Ukraine’s Sumy region, where Russian forces have been attempting to establish a buffer zone. At the start of 2026, all but the northernmost section of the area currently under Russian control was held by Ukrainian forces. Russia has since seized a narrow strip of territory approximately 70 kilometres in length, though analysts describe the gains as limited and not strategically significant.
The ammunition storage facility would have directly supplied Russian units operating in the Sumy sector, where Moscow’s push to create a buffer zone continues at what is assessed to be a high cost in casualties. Information from this section of the front remains limited, but casualty rates are believed to be consistent with the heavy losses observed across other sectors of the front line.
Footage of the strike was released by the Suchomimus channel, which monitors and analyses aerial operations in the theatre.
