Putin Health Under Scrutiny Following Leaked Video

(MOSCOW) – A leaked recording of the Russian dictator, Vladimir Putin, has triggered fresh speculation regarding his physical condition after he was filmed struggling to complete a scheduled address. The footage, which appeared on the official Kremlin Telegram channel for four minutes before being deleted, captured the 73 year old leader coughing uncontrollably for approximately 30 seconds during a speech intended for International Women’s Day.

In the outtake, the dictator appears visibly uncomfortable, gesturing towards his throat and pausing his remarks. He is heard to say: “You know, let me say that again, because my throat is a bit scratchy. I almost started coughing. I have been talking a lot today.” Following the removal of the clip, the presidential press service released an edited version half the length of the original, featuring a fluent performance in which he praised the resilience of women.

The incident provides a rare breach in the carefully managed public persona maintained by the autocratic leader. Historically, his image has been protected through choreographed media appearances and the frequent use of pre-recorded footage. Lev Vershinin, a pro-Russian blogger, suggested the leak might indicate internal dissent, noting that such a technical failure should be impossible under standard Kremlin protocols. He described the lapse as appearing, in systemic terms, like a revolt.

Ukrainian journalist Denys Kazansky speculated that the footage may have been intentionally released due to internal frustration with an “ailing, senile old man,” noting that the clip causes the image of a strong leader to crumble. British historian Mark Almond drew parallels to 1982, when Soviet TV inadvertently broadcast the physical decay of Leonid Brezhnev shortly before his death.

While Putin has previously dismissed health rumours—even claiming a friend referred to him as a “cyborg”—and his spokesman Dmitry Peskov insists he rarely sleeps, the dictator appears increasingly preoccupied with longevity. In 2024, he launched the New Health Preservation Technologies project, which directs significant state funding toward preventing cellular ageing and neurotechnology. Sources at a Moscow hospital reportedly described the initiative to the outlet Meduza as the “whims of an ageing Politburo.”

The pursuit of immortality appears to be a family and inner-circle priority. Mikhail Kovalchuk, a close associate, has received millions in funding for research into organ replacement. Furthermore, Maria Vorontsova, the daughter of the dictator, was awarded a 2025 grant for a project focused on cell renewal.

Vladimir Putin was caught struggling to speak and coughing repeatedly in an out-take from a recorded address leaked by the Kremlin.

In the video, which was posted online for four minutes before being removed, the Russian president suddenly stops speaking, gestures towards his neck and begins clearing his throat and coughing incessantly for about 30 seconds.

Putin, 73, says during the address for International Women’s Day: “You know, let me say that again, because my throat is a bit scratchy. I almost started coughing. I’ve been talking a lot today.”

The original video was posted to the Kremlin’s Telegram channel, then deleted without explanation.
