(KYIV, UKRAINE) – A network of pro-war Russian military bloggers, known as ‘Z-bloggers’, are increasingly deviating from official Kremlin narratives by publishing detailed accounts of massive Russian casualties and criticising military leadership, according to analysis of their channels. The bloggers, who typically advocate for a more aggressive war effort, are reporting staggering loss figures and command failures that contradict the Russian Defence Ministry’s tightly controlled propaganda.

These nationalist bloggers, operating with a degree of tolerance from the state, are considered by observers to periodically release accurate information to maintain credibility with their audience. Their recent reports allege that Russian military losses since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022 could exceed 400,000 killed, with some estimates reaching a total casualty figure of 1.5 million. The Russian Defence Ministry last published a loss figure in September 2022, claiming just 5,937 deaths.

The bloggers’ accounts highlight severe dysfunction within the Russian military command structure. They cite the prolonged battle for the eastern city of Chasiv Yar as an example, where despite official claims of control, fierce fighting continues. The bloggers have openly criticised sacked Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, with one prominent channel accusing Gerasimov of delivering “absolute nonsense” and deliberately obscuring true casualty rates and territorial losses.

Analysts note the bloggers’ primary concern is Russian military inefficiency, not opposition to the war itself. They often call for total mobilisation and more brutal tactics to achieve the Kremlin’s objectives. However, their reports underscore a critical problem for the Russian dictatorship: a significant decline in voluntary military recruitment. Where once there were queues at recruitment offices, motivated by signing bonuses reaching 5 to 6 million rubles (approximately £43,000 to £51,500 or $55,000 to $66,000 USD), incentives are now reportedly being delayed and volunteer numbers have dwindled.

This has reportedly created a dilemma for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, who analysts say fears the domestic political consequences of a second nationwide mobilisation. Instead, his regime appears to be relying on covert methods to bolster troop numbers, including recruiting prisoners, pressuring conscripts into contracts, and calling up reservists for “training” that may lead directly to deployment in Ukraine.

Militarily, the Russian offensive has largely stalled against heavily fortified Ukrainian defensive lines. The Z-bloggers themselves express frustration at the lack of progress despite catastrophic losses, noting that Ukrainian forces have established deep defensive networks that are inflicting disproportionate casualties. The widespread use of first person view (FPV) drones by Ukraine is cited as a primary factor, creating extensive “kill zones” that devastate Russian infantry and armour assaults.

The growing dissonance between the grim realities described by military bloggers and the relentless victory narratives on state television is creating unease within Russian society. The physical evidence of war, including expanding cemeteries and drone strikes on Russian infrastructure, is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. While overt dissent remains muted, the bloggers’ shock at the scale of losses indicates a spreading awareness of the war’s human cost.

The situation presents a significant strategic challenge for the Putin regime. With volunteer numbers falling, offensive operations bogged down, and authoritative pro-war voices exposing military failures, sustaining the current war trajectory indefinitely appears increasingly untenable. Ukrainian officials, while acknowledging their own substantial losses, maintain that their defensive posture and technological advantage in drone warfare will ultimately prevent a Russian victory.
