(KYIV, UKRAINE) – Ukrainian forces have successfully repelled a Russian assault aimed at breaking through defensive positions, capturing a Russian soldier and seizing military equipment that Ukrainian officials say will provide valuable intelligence on Russian tactics. The engagement involved units of the 401st Separate Special Battalion, according to Ukrainian military sources.

The fighting took place against the backdrop of a broader wave of Russian attacks across Ukraine. On Thursday, January 8, Russian forces launched nearly 100 drones in a large scale operation targeting critical and civilian infrastructure, Ukrainian authorities said. Several regions were affected, with local officials reporting injuries and widespread disruption to essential services.

One of the heaviest strikes hit the city of Kryvyi Rih, which authorities described as the largest attack on the city since the start of Russia’s full scale invasion. The strikes occurred on the evening of January 7 and injured at least eight people, according to regional officials.

In the Dnipro region, the aftermath of the attacks left about 800,000 residents without electricity, resulting in a complete blackout in some areas. Local media reported that parts of the city were fully without power. Metro services were halted, escalators stopped operating and emergency crews evacuated passengers from underground tunnels. In the Zaporizhzhia region, officials initially reported a total power outage across the city, although electricity supply was later restored.

On the front lines, Ukrainian military sources said the Zaporizhzhia sector remains one of the most intense areas of fighting. Russian forces are reported to be concentrating additional manpower and increasing the number of assault groups, while also intensifying the use of aviation. Ukrainian troops reported dozens of guided and unguided aerial bombs being dropped during individual attacks.

Ukrainian analysts said Russian forces are attempting to encircle areas near Hulyaipole, with increased shelling reported across the region. More than 700 strikes per day have been recorded using a wide range of weapons, including attacks deep inside Ukrainian territory. Analysts believe the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is seeking to advance towards the regional capital, the city of Zaporizhzhia, although the precise direction and scale of any main assault remain unclear.

Beyond Ukraine’s borders, the United States military announced the detention of two vessels suspected of violating sanctions linked to Russia. The tanker Marinetta was detained in the North Atlantic, while the vessel MT Sophia was intercepted in the Caribbean Sea. US authorities said the MT Sophia was operating without a national flag and is now being escorted by the US Coast Guard for disposal. The Pentagon said the actions were part of Operation Southern Spear, aimed at countering illegal activities and protecting US security interests.

The British newspaper The Independent reported that US forces used a U28A Draco special operations aircraft during the operation, supported by Boeing P8 Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft and KC135 aerial refuelling planes.

Meanwhile, dangerous but essential work continues on the ground in Ukraine to clear areas contaminated by Russian mines and unexploded shells. Ukrainian engineers have deployed an autonomous mechanical demining machine developed by local specialists. The system can scan terrain and neutralise explosive threats without a human operator, reducing the risks previously faced by sappers and infantry units.

Footage released from the front line shows the machine moving systematically across open fields, scanning each section of ground. Teams of sappers monitor the operation and remove detected explosives for safe disposal.

Ukrainian drone units have also continued to target Russian positions. FPV drone operators from the Aquila unit of the Steel Border Brigade carried out a strike along Ukraine’s border, destroying four enemy vehicles and hitting an ammunition depot, a motor pool and an assault shelter. Ukrainian officials said the operation was carefully planned and executed to maximise impact while minimising risk to their own forces.

In the most recent engagement, soldiers from the 401st Separate Special Battalion repelled a Russian attack aimed at breaching Ukrainian positions. One Russian assault soldier was captured, and Ukrainian troops seized documents and technical equipment from the battlefield. Ukrainian military sources said Russian forces suffered significant losses in both personnel and equipment.

According to operational assessments, the captured materials are expected to provide insight into Russian methods of operation and support improvements to Ukraine’s defensive strategies in the area. Ukrainian officials said the coordinated response by their forces not only halted the attack but also strengthened their ability to anticipate future Russian actions
