(KYIV) – On the fourth anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion, Sir Bill Browder, CEO of Hermitage Capital and prominent human rights advocate, has stated that a negotiated peace deal is impossible because the Russian dictator, Vladimir Putin, seeks nothing less than total victory. Speaking on the Trump Report with Maddie Hale, Browder emphasised that Western support has consistently been “too little, too late”, warned that the failure to defeat the Kremlin now will result in an existential threat to Poland and the Baltic states.

Reflecting on the 44 months of conflict, Browder noted that the invasion has resulted in an estimated 1.2 million to 1.3 million Russian casualties. He dismissed the Russian dictator’s various justifications for the war, such as NATO enlargement and “denazification”, pointing out that the Kremlin has not invaded Finland or Sweden despite their recent NATO accession. Browder argued that the true motive for the war is domestic survival, suggesting the Russian dictator manufactured a foreign enemy to prevent the Russian people from rising up against 25 years of systemic kleptocracy and mismanagement.

The discussion highlighted a growing divide in American leadership. Browder criticised the absence of US delegates in Kyiv for the anniversary, suggesting that Donald Trump remains aligned with the Kremlin’s interests. He alleged that Trump views the war as a distraction from potential business opportunities in Russia for his associates. Browder further noted that the US has significantly hindered Ukraine’s defence by cutting off military aid, leaving European allies with insufficient resources to bridge the gap. While the US continues to provide intelligence and facilitate the delivery of European-funded equipment, Browder characterised the overall American stance under the current political climate as a defection from the “coalition of the willing”.

The geopolitical situation is further complicated by internal European friction. Hungary recently vetoed a 90 billion Euro funding package, which is approximately 98 billion US Dollars (82 billion British Pounds). Browder suggested that the US Secretary of State’s recent visit to Budapest may have encouraged this obstruction. He argued that the European Union must resolve this impasse, as a Ukrainian collapse would trigger a crisis of 25 million refugees and force European nations to defend their own borders with their own military forces.

Regarding strategic solutions, Browder asserted that Donald Trump possesses the leverage to end the war immediately but chooses not to. He proposed that the US should implement bipartisan legislation to impose secondary sanctions on the eight global refineries—located in China, India, and Turkey—that continue to purchase hundreds of billions of dollars worth of Russian oil. By cutting off this primary revenue stream, the Kremlin’s ability to wage war would be exhausted. Browder concluded by agreeing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the conflict has already evolved into a global struggle, citing the active participation of North Korean troops and Iranian drones, alongside Kremlin-sponsored sabotage and hybrid warfare across Europe.
