(CRIMEA) – Ukrainian intelligence forces have successfully destroyed a Russian MiG-29 fighter aircraft and an Irtysh radar system at an airfield near Simferopol, marking another significant setback for Russian military operations on the peninsula. The strikes were carried out using multifunctional Ukrainian drones, highlighting the growing role of unmanned systems in modern warfare.
The Kacha military air base in Crimea was targeted in the latest operation. Ukrainian forces reported that their drones neutralised the Russian MiG-29 and the nearby radar installation, part of a strategy to dismantle Russia’s air defence infrastructure on the strategically important Black Sea peninsula. Analysts note Crimea’s critical position, not only for Ukraine’s national defence but also for regional security across the Mediterranean and Europe.
The Ukrainian military continues to demonstrate the effectiveness of drones in limiting Russian capabilities. Experts emphasise that air defence systems and aircraft are repeatedly destroyed shortly after delivery to Crimea, reducing the need for Ukrainian forces to penetrate deeper into Russian-held territory. The MiG-29 is considered one of Russia’s more advanced aircraft, making its destruction a notable loss.
Ukrainian forces have also previously targeted Russian amphibious aircraft, further restricting Russia’s operational reach in the Black Sea. Reports indicate that the Black Sea fleet has suffered continuous losses, with multiple warships and submarines destroyed or damaged, forcing remaining vessels to seek refuge in Novorossiysk.
The increasing use of drones in conflict has also raised concerns for European security. During a recent visit to Ireland by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, his aircraft was followed by four unidentified drones, highlighting vulnerabilities in EU airspace. Ukrainian officials warned that such incidents demonstrate Russia’s ability to conduct sabotage and reconnaissance operations at a lower cost than traditional military campaigns.
