(KYIV) – Ukrainian divers from the State Emergency Service (DSNS) have carried out a unique underwater operation in freezing conditions of up to minus 15°C to repair a key power plant in the capital.
The operation was prompted by Russian shelling, which caused flooding at one of Kyiv’s thermal power plants (TECs) by damaging a water pipe. This posed serious challenges to repairing the equipment, which provides heat and electricity to thousands of households.
Without hesitation, the DSNS divers entered icy waters and began work to stop the leak. The special operation lasted six days. By halting the water flow, the divers enabled repair teams to continue restoring critical infrastructure.
The divers’ professionalism and courage were recognised by the Ukrainian state. According to a decree by the President of Ukraine:
-
Artem Orlov, Denys Frolov, and Mykhailo Khizhniak received the Order “For Courage” III degree.
-
Andriy Vlasenko was awarded the Order of Danylo Halytsky.
-
Anton Haytan received the “Defender of the Fatherland” medal.
This operation demonstrates the responsibility and bravery that maintain essential services in the most challenging conditions.
