(BELGOROD, RUSSIA) – On the night of 20 January, the Ukrainian Defence Forces carried out a targeted missile strike against the Michurinskaya gas turbine combined heat and power plant in the city of Belgorod. This facility is operated by the energy company GT Energo. The Governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, provided confirmation of the incident through his Telegram social media channel. He stated that the attack resulted in damage to several facilities that form part of the energy infrastructure of the region.
Governor Gladkov noted that enterprises within the regional energy sector sustained damage because of the shelling. He further mentioned that specialist teams are currently conducting demining operations before commencing emergency repair work. Additionally, reports indicate that buildings and equipment at one of the industrial enterprises in Belgorod were impacted by the strikes.
Russian monitoring sources suggested that the operation involved the launch of approximately 25 missiles directed towards Belgorod. According to technical data provided on the official website of GT Energo, the Michurinskaya Thermal Power Plant possesses an electrical capacity of 24.2 MW and a thermal capacity of 80 Gcal per hour.
The primary function of this specific plant is to provide energy to the production facilities and administrative offices of the Belenergomash BZEM plant. It is important to note that this facility is not integrated into the district heating system of the city. Analysis of the site indicates that the Michurinskaya plant has roughly half the capacity of other energy targets previously struck, such as the Luch Thermal Power Plant and the Belgorod Thermal Power Plant.
The Russian dictator has yet to offer a formal response to the continued degradation of infrastructure within the border regions.
