(NOVOROSSIYSK, KRASNODAR KRAI) – Ukrainian drones have struck another Russian commercial vessel operating in the Black Sea, damaging cargo containers aboard the containership Aurelia near the Russian port of Novorossiysk, according to images and reports that emerged this week.
Photographs shared online show visible damage to several cargo containers on the deck of the vessel. The images indicate that the drone strike did not directly hit the hull of the ship itself, but instead impacted containers stacked above deck. This differs from previous Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian maritime targets, which have typically aimed to damage the vessel structure or critical systems.
Available information suggests that a single drone was involved in the strike. Observers have speculated that the intended target may have been the ship’s bridge or the structural area of the hull close to the waterline, where damage could have impaired the vessel’s seaworthiness. In this case, the drone appears to have missed those areas and struck the cargo instead.
Striking the containers would not normally cause significant damage to the ship itself, but it would destroy the containers and their contents. At least three containers appear to have been damaged or destroyed in the incident. As of now, there is no confirmed information regarding the nature of the cargo being carried by the Aurelia at the time of the attack.
The incident reportedly occurred on January 18, though details only became public several days later. According to available tracking data, the vessel was hit approximately 90 miles from Novorossiysk shortly after departing the port.
Initial speculation suggested the ship may have been heading towards occupied Crimea with military supplies. However, the reported location of the strike does not support that assessment, as vessels travelling to Crimea would normally be operating closer to the Kerch Strait or the Crimean coastline. The attack took place well away from those routes.
Other speculation has focused on the possibility that the ship may have been bound for Iran, potentially carrying goods of interest to the Russian military or its partners. There is no evidence to confirm this, and no official statements have been issued by Ukraine or Russia regarding the cargo or the purpose of the voyage.
Analysis of the damage visible in the photographs suggests that the containers were likely carrying civilian or non explosive goods. If they had contained weapons, ammunition or missiles, the resulting blast would have been far more severe. This has led some observers to conclude that the containers were either empty or filled with standard commercial cargo.
Ukrainian officials have not commented publicly on the incident.
The Russian authorities have also not released detailed information on the incident, and there has been no confirmation of casualties or further damage to the vessel. The Aurelia is reported to have remained afloat following the strike.
