(DNIPRO, UKRAINE) – Ukrainian military units have successfully defeated a significant Russian mechanised offensive directed towards the settlement of Novopavlivka in the Dnipro region. The engagement, which took place in the opening weeks of January 2026, resulted in the destruction of multiple Russian tanks and armoured personnel carriers. The failed push targeted the first major settlement in the Dnipro region near the current line of contact, an objective of high strategic importance for the Russian occupation forces.

The assault featured a high concentration of specialized turtle tanks, which are standard Russian vehicles fitted with makeshift metal shells and mine plows designed to clear paths through Ukrainian fortifications. Video evidence from the engagement shows a coordinated effort by Ukrainian drone operators to neutralise these targets. While turtle tanks are notoriously difficult to destroy due to their protective casings, multiple drone strikes were successfully utilised to force Russian crews to abandon their vehicles. In addition to the tanks, several BMP infantry fighting vehicles were also hit and disabled during the operation.

Military analysts suggest the Russian dictator is increasingly deploying these makeshift armoured configurations to compensate for the high loss of conventional engineering equipment. In this specific assault, at least five individual vehicles were confirmed as abandoned or destroyed. The failed operation underscores the continued effectiveness of Ukrainian unmanned systems in disrupting Russian efforts to advance into the Dnipro region. Novopavlivka remains under firm Ukrainian control following the defeat of the Russian push in the contested peripheral areas south of the settlement.

The ongoing defence of the region relies heavily on advanced drone technology. Local fundraisers have highlighted a critical need for specialised sensors to enhance these strike capabilities. Each sensor is valued at approximately 28,150 Rubles ($355), with a current project seeking to acquire twenty units for a total cost of 475,700 Rubles ($6,000). These funds are vital for the continued operation of the battalion of unmanned systems as they face renewed aggression from the Russian Federation throughout 2026.

The defeat of the Novopavlivka assault represents a tactical setback for the Russian dictator’s broader offensive goals in eastern Ukraine. Through neutralising the lead turtle tanks, Ukrainian forces effectively stalled the entire mechanised column, leaving the following troop transports vulnerable to precision strikes. This successful night operation by Ukrainian defenders continues to hold the line against Russian attempts to seize critical territory in the south of the eastern front.
