Reports from January 7, 2026, confirm that the 46th Separate Airmobile Brigade (the “Podillia” paratroopers) successfully intercepted and defeated a massive Russian mechanized assault in the Pokrovsk sector.

The engagement is being highlighted as a significant defensive victory due to the high volume of Russian equipment destroyed in a single push.

The assault was characterized by the use of heavy armor and infantry attempting to breach Ukrainian lines under the cover of winter weather. According to the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the results of the clash included:

Personnel: 59 Russian soldiers killed and 6 wounded.

Heavy Armor: 2 tanks and 2 armored combat vehicles (ACVs) destroyed

Light Vehicles: 3 “Bukhanka” (UAZ-452) transport vans destroyed.

Tactics: The 46th Brigade utilized a coordinated “triple threat” defense involving combat engineers (mines), artillery units, and FPV drone teams to trap and dismantle the Russian column.

The Pokrovsk sector remains the most volatile area of the front. As of January 8, 2026, the General Staff of Ukraine reported 77 separate Russian assaults in this direction alone within a 24-hour window.

Infiltration Attempts: Russian forces have been attempting to bypass Ukrainian strongholds by pushing through industrial zones and smaller settlements like Hryshyne and Rodynske.

Fire Control: Ukrainian drone operators currently maintain fire control over Russian ground lines of communication (GLOCs). This forces Russian troops to dismount their vehicles 5–7 kilometers away from the frontline, significantly slowing their ability to resupply or reinforce active assaults.

The 46th’s Track Record: This brigade has become a specialist in “column hunting.” Throughout late 2025 and into early 2026, they have repeatedly published footage of successful repulses, often involving foreign mercenaries integrated into Russian infantry units in this specific sector.
