(DONETSK OBLAST) – Ukrainian Special Operations Forces have carried out a successful raid against Russian positions in severe winter conditions in eastern Ukraine, according to footage and details released by the military.
The operation was conducted by operators of the 8th Regiment of the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces on one of the active fronts in Donetsk Oblast. The action took place in a snow covered forest, where temperatures fell to minus 15 degrees Celsius, highlighting the harsh conditions faced by Ukrainian units operating close to and behind Russian lines.
According to the Ukrainian military, the special operations group launched a direct assault on an enemy position. Two Russian servicemen were killed at an observation post during the raid. Three additional Russian soldiers took shelter in a dugout but later surrendered after sustained pressure from the Ukrainian operators and were taken prisoner.
Ukrainian officials said the operation demonstrated not only tactical effectiveness but also the ability of special forces units to operate in extreme winter environments. Such missions require adapted procedures for clothing, camouflage, and the use of sensitive equipment in freezing temperatures, as well as a high level of physical endurance and psychological readiness among personnel.
The military noted that careful planning by headquarters played a critical role in the success of the raid. Extensive preparation, including the development of contingency or what if scenarios, was carried out in advance. While the direct assault group was captured on video, the Ukrainian command said several supporting elements operated out of view.
These included a drone unit providing aerial awareness, a fire support group, an electronic warfare unit, and other specialised components. Together, these elements helped ensure coordination, situational awareness, and protection for the assault team during the operation.
The Ukrainian Special Operations Forces said the mission reflected their broader approach to modern warfare, combining direct action with intelligence, technology, and detailed planning, even in the most demanding weather and terrain conditions. The unit reiterated its long standing motto that its operators work beyond conventional limits in defence of Ukraine.
