(KYIV, UKRAINE) – A military intelligence assessment provided to the British Ministry of Defence has detailed a profoundly disproportionate casualty rate during Ukraine’s recapture of the strategic town of Kupiansk. The report, cited by The Independent, indicated a kill ratio of 1:27, with 27 Russian soldiers lost for every Ukrainian soldier killed in the combat for the Kharkiv region town.
The figures, reportedly shared in a briefing with Ukrainian officials, reveal the severe human cost to the Russian military of its offensive tactics, often described by analysts as a ‘meat grinder’ approach. They also highlight the defensive efficiency of Ukrainian forces during the operation. The battle saw Ukrainian troops successfully surround and engage Russian units in late December before reclaiming full control last month
Kyiv now asserts that it controls nearly 90 per cent of the strategic northeastern logistics hub. This tactical achievement comes amid ongoing political tensions following the recent G7 summit, where US President Donald Trump blamed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for obstructing peace talks, an accusation President Zelensky has firmly rejected
The Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has repeatedly dismissed substantive diplomacy, insisting on terms that would see Ukraine cede occupied territories.
