(ROSTOV-ON-DON, RUSSIA) – The Russian city of Rostov-on-Don came under aerial attack during the night of Wednesday, 14 January 2026, according to reports from Ukrainian and local sources. The incident reportedly involved strikes on industrial infrastructure and subsequent damage to civilian areas from Russian defensive actions.
Local public groups, cited by the Ukrainian news agency UNN, stated that drones likely struck oil product storage tanks at the Empils industrial plant. During the response to the aerial assault, Russia’s own air defence systems are reported to have hit residential buildings in the area.
Footage and commentary from these local online channels framed the event with heavy irony, referring to the residential damage as “self-shelling” and documenting what they termed the “war crimes of the Russian Armed Forces against their own population.” The Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s regime has repeatedly attributed such damage within Russia to Ukrainian operations, often without independent verification.
This event occurs within a broader context of increasing strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. A Bloomberg report from December 2025 noted that Ukraine had carried out a record number of attacks that month on Russia’s oil refineries, tankers, and pipeline assets. These operations are widely viewed as a strategic effort to disrupt a key source of petrodollar revenue, which finances the Kremlin’s war effort. The Ukrainian government has not formally commented on the specific incident in Rostov-on-Don.
