Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression is entering a new phase, with the country relying on innovative drone warfare, strategic strikes on Russian infrastructure, and Western support. In a detailed discussion with Alex from Ukraine, U.S. Air Force veteran and analyst Jake Bro outlined the current military, geopolitical, and economic dynamics shaping the war.

Targeting Russia’s Shadow Fleet
Russia operates over 1,000 so-called “shadow fleet” ships, roughly half owned directly and the remainder leased through third parties. Ukraine has successfully applied kinetic sanctions, targeting tankers in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. France and other Western nations have begun to interdict these vessels, but Bro argues a more coordinated approach is needed to choke Russia’s economy effectively.

“Russia is incapable of protecting these ships,” Bro said. “Their navy lacks the capacity, and their Black Sea fleet has largely surrendered. Western nations could start impounding these vessels en masse.”

The Rise of Drone Warfare
Ukraine is increasingly relying on fiber-optic FPV drones that cannot be jammed by electronic warfare. These inexpensive drones have proven capable of neutralizing advanced Russian air defence systems, including the S-300 and S-400. Bro noted that Ukraine’s focus on drones represents a broader shift toward autonomous systems and artificial intelligence in modern warfare.

“Ukraine has realised that human soldiers are a scarce resource,” he said. “You can build more drones, but you can’t create another 25-year-old man to fight on the front lines.”

Strategic Pause in Refinery Strikes
After months of attacks on Russian oil refineries, Ukraine paused its strikes in early January. Bro suggested multiple reasons: potential behind-the-scenes negotiations over infrastructure repairs, assessment of prior damage, and winter operational priorities focusing on energy infrastructure.

“Ukraine isn’t giving up,” he emphasised. “They’re simply recalibrating their strategy to maximise long-term impact.”

U.S. Policy and European Security Concerns
Bro expressed deep concern over the influence of Donald Trump and MAGA-aligned figures on U.S. foreign policy. He argued that Trump treats the military as a personal tool for profit and enrichment, using global interventions to benefit himself and allies rather than pursuing strategic security goals.

“Europe is facing threats from both the east and the west,” Bro warned. “Trump’s Greenland plan, his so-called peace council, and alliances with dictators undermine NATO and put European democracies at risk. The U.S. cannot currently be relied on to uphold international law or security guarantees.”

The Global Power Dynamic
Bro framed the current geopolitical situation as a return to a colonial, empire-driven world. According to him, Trump and Putin share a vision in which sovereignty belongs only to nations with nuclear weapons or populations exceeding a billion. Smaller countries are increasingly vulnerable unless they remain united, with the European Union serving as the primary counterbalance.

Corruption and Business Interests
The discussion also highlighted concerns about corruption disguised as business deals, particularly involving figures like Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Bro argued that purported peace negotiations are often a cover for asset transfers and lucrative business arrangements rather than genuine efforts to end the war.

Optimism for Ukraine’s Position
Despite ongoing hardships including power outages in Kyiv, Bro emphasised that Russia is weaker than commonly perceived, and its collapse could be imminent. Ukraine’s resilience, innovative strategies, and Western support are key to sustaining resistance and ultimately achieving victory.

“Russia has never been closer to defeat,” Bro said. “Ukrainians continue to fight for democracy under extraordinary conditions. The international community must continue to support them.”
