(MOSCOW, RUSSIA) – On Russian state television, host Vladimir Solovyov discussed recent footage related to the frontline town of Kupyansk in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, questioning Ukrainian claims and repeating long standing Kremlin talking points about territory and the progress of the conflict.

Solovyov reacted to a video message from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy filmed near Kupyansk, a contested frontline area. Solovyov suggested the images may not reflect the current situation and argued that some social media interpretations were alarmist. He said that a Russian drone was deployed to the site near a road sign marking Kupyansk to assess the scene, and claimed the location was about one kilometre from the town itself. He added that Russia had never publicly stated it controlled that specific position.

Solovyov also compared the situation to someone posing beside a road sign for Kyiv that is hundreds of kilometres from the capital, implying that imagery can be misleading without broader context. He questioned the level of damage shown in the footage, suggesting it might predate recent events.

Solovyov declined to provide detailed analysis of the military situation, noting that professional soldiers were better placed to assess developments. He described the fighting near Kupyansk and elsewhere as complex and fluid, and urged audiences to rely on verified information rather than video content alone.

He repeated the Kremlin’s position that the Donbas region is Russian territory and insisted that Ukrainian forces would ultimately be forced to withdraw.

Solovyov’s commentary came amid contrasting statements from Ukraine. Ukrainian officials and Zelenskyy have disputed Moscow’s claims about Kupyansk, noting that Ukrainian forces have carried out counterattacks and regained territory in the area. Ukraine’s general staff reported that a counterattack north of Kupyansk led to the encirclement of some Russian units, directly contradicting Russian messaging.

Zelenskyy recorded a video on 12 December from the Kupyansk sector, standing near a heavily damaged sign at the city’s entrance and thanking Ukrainian troops for their efforts. He said that the reality on the ground spoke for itself and that he had visited soldiers to congratulate them, calling their efforts important for both battlefield success and diplomatic leverage.
