(BLACK SEA REGION) – Ukraine has denied involvement in a recent attack on a Russian linked tanker transporting sunflower oil in the Black Sea, describing accusations from Moscow as misinformation and suggesting Russia may be responsible for the incident itself.
A spokesperson for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country played no role in the damage to the vessel. They noted that the tanker’s route through Turkey’s exclusive economic zone made little sense for a ship reportedly travelling from Russia to Georgia, raising concerns that the event could have been staged to justify further Russian action against agricultural shipping to and from Ukraine.
Turkey has condemned recent strikes on shipping in the region, which have pushed insurance costs higher and forced shipping companies to suspend operations due to safety concerns.
A captain on the damaged tanker reported that an aerial drone struck the ship’s command deck but caused no serious injuries. Previous attacks on Russian associated tankers in the Black Sea were carried out using naval drones, an inconsistency that has fuelled speculation about the cause of this latest event.
If proven to be a Russian operation, analysts say the attack may be used to justify future actions against foreign vessels supporting Ukraine.
Russia’s leader has warned that any further damage to Russian shipping could prompt retaliation against ships belonging to countries that assist Ukraine. Russian authorities have also ordered underwater inspections of all foreign ships entering Russian ports due to concerns about hidden explosives.
One NATO partner shipping company based in Turkey has announced it will cease transporting Russian goods following recent incidents.
Separately, Ukrainian officials say special units carried out a new attack on the Deruzha oil pipeline inside Russia. The pipeline is used to transport crude oil to refineries in Belarus which then return refined fuel back to Russia. Ukraine has struck the pipeline multiple times, claiming it supports Russia’s military operations.
Russia continues to repair damaged infrastructure, but Ukraine has stated it will persist in targeting energy systems used in the war effort. Recent economic figures show Russian oil and gas revenues falling sharply on a yearly basis.
Russian Oil and Gas Revenues (Year on Year Comparison)
| Year | Revenue (Billion Rubles) | Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 890 B RUB | Baseline |
| 2024 | 590 B RUB | Down 34 percent |
Exchange note: RUB 590 billion ≈ USD 6.7 billion at current rates.
Ukraine has also confirmed strikes in Crimea, including the destruction of a MiG 29 fighter aircraft and damage to radar systems. In addition, a chemical plant in Tambov region critical to explosives production caught fire after what Russian officials described as falling debris from a drone.
Russia has halted plans to construct a major railway line linking Siberia to China due to costs estimated at around 50 trillion rubles (about USD 644 billion).
Meanwhile, Russia continues to expand digital restrictions inside its borders. The government has banned online platform Roblox, which has around 2 million active Russian users, mostly children. Authorities have also removed a Russian cosmonaut from an International Space Station mission after allegations of photographing and leaking sensitive aerospace materials.
In southern Ukraine, Russian artillery strikes on Herson heating facilities have left more than 40,000 residents without heat. Local officials report that civilians, including children, continue to be killed in attacks on residential and medical buildings.
Ukraine continues to improve technologies to counter Russian drones, including interceptor drones and automated targeting systems.
Ukrainian civil institutions remain functional despite the ongoing conflict, with trains, banks and businesses operating under wartime conditions. Political analysts indicate that while corruption cases are taken seriously by the public, they have not destabilised the government.
On the frontline, Russia maintains slow advances in parts of eastern Ukraine, but continues to control less territory overall than at earlier points in the conflict.
Diplomatic efforts have shown no progress. A recent meeting in Moscow involving representatives associated with United States officials resulted in no agreed compromise. Russian authorities indicated they are satisfied with their current military position and have no interest in ending the war.
Ukraine continues to insist it will not accept territorial concessions and will defend its sovereignty until Russian forces leave its internationally recognised borders.
