(JUBA) – The Governor of the Bank of South Sudan (BoSS), Hon. Dr. Addis Ababa Othow, has reaffirmed his commitment to advancing digital banking and institutional reform across the country’s financial sector. His recent declaration marks a renewed push to implement the National Payment System and promote modern banking services across South Sudan.

According to the Governor, no effort will be spared in moving the country’s banking operations towards full digitalisation. He believes the adoption of digital tools, including mobile banking, will help improve customer experience and attract more users to the formal banking system.

Digital banking tools offer broader access to services, especially for unbanked and underbanked populations. Although internet access remains limited in South Sudan, experts say that digital transformation, if well managed, can gradually reduce economic inequality by reaching previously excluded groups.

However, many citizens currently remain outside digital financial networks. The cost of mobile devices and the poor internet infrastructure make digital banking a distant dream for large segments of the population. Still, policymakers believe that as digital services become more essential, even those who are currently excluded will make efforts to access the necessary tools.

Governor Othow emphasised the need to balance digitalisation with accountability and structural reform. He pointed out that internal reviews and restructuring of departments within the central bank are ongoing, with the aim of strengthening oversight and improving operational efficiency.

The reforms are also designed to enhance professional capacity at BoSS, improve consumer protection, and tighten regulatory controls. A more integrated structure is being planned to align with global best practices in financial oversight.
