(JUBA COUNTY) – South Sudan’s communications regulator has established a new oversight body to manage the country’s international gateway services and national data centre, a move aimed at improving governance and strengthening control over a critical part of the digital economy.
The Director General of the National Communication Authority, Rizig Dominic Samuel, chaired a meeting with MGI Communications AG to formally constitute the Gateway Services and Data Center Oversight Committee. The meeting brought together senior officials and technical partners involved in the management of national communications infrastructure.
The newly formed committee has been tasked with reinforcing governance, accountability and institutional control over gateway services and the national data centre. These assets are central to international connectivity, data management and the flow of digital services across South Sudan.
According to the Authority, the committee’s priorities include the digitisation of revenue streams generated through the South Sudan International Gateway. This is intended to improve transparency, reduce leakages and ensure that public revenues from communications services are fully captured for national use.
Modernisation of infrastructure is also a key focus. The Authority said upgraded systems are required to support secure digital platforms and to meet the growing demand for reliable connectivity from businesses, public institutions and consumers. Ensuring that operations comply with national sovereignty and security requirements is another core responsibility of the oversight body.
The National Communication Authority stated that stronger regulatory oversight and improved digital revenue collection would help ensure that national communication resources contribute more effectively to economic development and technological self reliance. Officials see the reforms as part of broader efforts to build a sustainable digital economy in South Sudan.
MGI Communications AG, a Swiss based international telecommunications firm, manages South Sudan’s international gateway services and key data centre infrastructure. The company has been working with national authorities on technical operations and system upgrades.
MGI Communications AG said its current activities include digitising national revenue systems linked to gateway services, upgrading gateway technology and expanding digital access in underserved areas. These efforts are intended to support wider connectivity while aligning operations with the regulatory framework set by the Authority.
