(JUBA) – South Sudan’s Ministry of Finance and Planning and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security have agreed to strengthen cooperation to support food security and agricultural investment, as the country prepares for the upcoming farming season.
The Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr Bak Barnaba Chol, convened a joint meeting with a delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security led by Minister Hussien Abdelbagi to review areas of collaboration between the two institutions. The discussions focused on aligning policy and budget priorities to support national development goals.
During the meeting, both sides highlighted the need to prioritise investment in agriculture as part of efforts to diversify South Sudan’s economy. Officials noted that the sector remains central to livelihoods, employment and domestic food supply, making it a key pillar for economic stability.
The ministers and their technical teams examined the budget proposal submitted by the Ministry of Agriculture for the current year. They reviewed planned activities and agreed on priority areas that require funding and policy support to strengthen production, improve resilience and enhance food availability.
The discussions also stressed the importance of implementing presidential directives that call for greater attention to agriculture and food security. With the farming season approaching, the two ministries underlined the need for timely decisions to ensure farmers receive the necessary support.
Officials said the agreed priorities are expected to guide spending decisions and help translate policy commitments into practical support for farmers and rural communities.
A statement from the Ministry of Agriculture (National) said that for South Sudan, where agriculture accounts for a large share of household income and consumption, closer coordination between finance and sector ministries is seen as critical.
