(JUBA) – The Governor of Eastern Equatoria State, Louis Lobong Lojore, has sought Chinese support to rehabilitate and upgrade a state hospital into a fully equipped referral facility. He made the request during a courtesy visit to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Juba on Tuesday, 29 July 2025.

Governor Lobong praised the strong cooperation between South Sudan and China, describing the partnership as longstanding and beneficial to both nations. He presented a strategic project concept note outlining the need for improved health infrastructure in Eastern Equatoria, particularly the transformation of one hospital into a referral centre capable of serving the wider region.

The governor said the hospital upgrade would not only improve health care delivery but also strengthen the state’s capacity to respond to medical emergencies. He emphasised that with relative peace and security in Eastern Equatoria, the environment is conducive for new partnerships and investment. According to him, the state’s stability makes it a safe destination for international investors seeking opportunities in health, infrastructure and other sectors.

Lobong also used the meeting to highlight the broader investment potential of Eastern Equatoria. He emphaised the importance of strategic partnerships in unlocking resources, building infrastructure and promoting socio-economic growth that benefits communities across South Sudan.

Responding to the request, the Chinese Ambassador welcomed the initiative and commended the goodwill gesture from Eastern Equatoria State. He pledged support for the hospital project, pending a detailed review of the concept note. The ambassador reaffirmed China’s continued commitment to working with South Sudan, recalling that Beijing has maintained close ties since recognising the country’s independence in 2011.

China has been a key partner in infrastructure, health, education and trade projects across South Sudan. The proposed hospital upgrade in Eastern Equatoria is expected to align with these broader efforts, strengthening the bilateral partnership and bringing tangible benefits to local communities.
