(JUBA) – The Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon Atong Kuol Manyang, met this week in Juba with representatives of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO) to explore ways of improving the quality and packaging of fish and honey products in South Sudan.

The meeting was held on 21 August 2025 and  attended by UNFAO Country Representative Meshack Oguna, alongside senior officials including the Undersecretary of the Ministry, Hon Ustaz Yel Luol, Director Generals and technical experts from both sides.

Central to the talks was the proposal to establish a specialised laboratory in South Sudan that would focus on packaging standards. The facility would help ensure that local products can meet international market requirements.

Manyang expressed gratitude to UNFAO for its continued support to South Sudan’s trade and agriculture sectors. She stressed the importance of training and capacity building, particularly for local communities engaged in fisheries and beekeeping. According to her, proper packaging skills are essential if producers are to compete in regional and global markets.

The Minister also highlighted one of the major challenges facing local producers, namely the shortage of reagents and modern equipment. Without these, it has been difficult for producers to guarantee consistent quality in line with international standards.

The UNFAO delegation reaffirmed its readiness to continue working with the Ministry. Discussions pointed to joint initiatives that could strengthen local industries, empower producers, and contribute to South Sudan’s broader economic development.

Fisheries and honey are considered emerging sectors in South Sudan’s non oil economy.
