(BOR) – Jonglei State Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok has launched the clearing and construction of a new wrestling ground aimed at promoting unity and strengthening traditional sport in the state.

According to the Governor’s press unit, the state owned wrestling initiative was launched on Monday in Pakaw. The project is expected to provide a permanent venue for wrestling events, which are popular across South Sudan.

Speaking during the launch, Governor Riek said his administration is committed to developing programmes and facilities that will benefit citizens and foster social cohesion.

“With the structures and programmes we are putting in place, we want to inject life into all sectors that serve our people,” he said. “My message today is that Jonglei State is on a path to greatness.”

The Governor stressed that his strategy focuses on practical economic activities and cultural initiatives designed to create visible results for communities. He said wrestling will be central to these efforts, both as a sport and as a unifying force among different ethnic groups within Jonglei and in neighbouring states.

“Wrestling is not just a sport, it is a tradition that brings people together,” he said. “Through this initiative we are building unity and advancing our transformation agenda.”

Riek thanked the people of Jonglei for trusting him with leadership and promised to deliver inclusive growth. “Expect the birth of a new Jonglei,” he said. “We are moving forward, and the state will soon feel alive again.”

The launch was attended by senior state officials including the Minister for Cabinet Affairs, the Minister for Roads and Bridges, the Minister for Youth and Sports, the Mayor of Bor Town, County Commissioners, military representatives and other dignitaries.
