(BOR) – Traders at Leudiet Market in Bor welcomed Jonglei State Governor Dr Riek Gai Kok on Thursday with songs and praise as he visited the site to inspect ongoing plans for infrastructure improvement. The governor’s visit came amid state efforts to modernise key markets and improve facilities for traders.
Governor Riek toured the market and inspected the location identified for the construction of the new Leudiet Port. He reassured the traders that the project was designed to benefit current occupants and not to displace them. He clarified that existing traders would be given priority in any allocations made under the redevelopment plans.
“This project is for the benefit of our people and the traders. We are not displacing anyone to bring in new traders. Existing traders will be given priority, so there is no need for panic,” he told those gathered at the market.
The governor called for strong cooperation between traders and the state government to ensure the project succeeds. He said the goal is to bring order and structure to trading areas, which will help in identifying traders and enabling them to access credit services to grow their businesses.
“We are modernising, organising, and bringing order to our markets. This will not only enhance trading activities but also enable us to properly identify traders and facilitate access to credit facilities that will help them expand their businesses,” he said.
He described the market upgrade as a “win win situation” for all and urged market leaders to help disseminate accurate information to traders to prevent fear or misinformation. He emphasised that the state government is committed to initiatives that have a direct and positive impact on people’s lives.
Governor Riek also noted that the Leudiet Market project would serve as a model for future development across Jonglei State. He said the administration plans to replicate the approach in other areas to improve economic opportunities and living conditions for citizens.
One of the traders, Nyanachiek Bior, said the market community appreciates the development and is optimistic about the benefits it will bring.
“We welcome the improvement of the Leudiet Market,” she said.
The redevelopment of Leudiet Market, especially with the proposed port facility, is expected to boost trade in Bor and beyond, with improved infrastructure, organisation, and potential for greater business financing.
