(JUBA) – The South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority (SSCAA), in partnership with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), has made further progress in improving safety infrastructure at Juba International Airport with the construction of a new firefighting water tank facility. The development is part of a broader plan to modernise the country’s main aviation hub and strengthen its emergency response systems.
According to Site Engineer Girma Sirme from Atlantic Construction Company, which is carrying out the works, the structure’s foundation extends 1.8 metres underground. Engineers are currently completing the sub-structure before installing the J-bolts that will support the steel superstructure. When finished, the tank will stand 10 metres tall and store up to 32,000 litres of water.
The facility is expected to play a vital role in enhancing the operational readiness of the airport’s firefighting units, which are responsible for responding to emergencies involving passenger aircraft, cargo flights, and other aviation incidents. The project comes at a time when South Sudan’s civil aviation system is working to meet international safety standards in order to attract more regional and international carriers.
The SSCAA said the project reflects its commitment to ensuring safety, protecting lives, and improving the efficiency of airport services. It also highlights the value of partnerships between national agencies and international organisations in developing South Sudan’s aviation infrastructure.
Airport officials believe the upgraded firefighting capability will strengthen confidence among airlines and passengers using Juba International Airport, which handles the majority of domestic and international traffic in the country. The project is part of ongoing efforts to transform the airport into a safer and more reliable regional gateway for trade and travel.
The initiative further supports South Sudan’s long term aviation growth plan, which includes runway expansion, modern navigation aids, and the improvement of ground handling services. Officials said such investments will help position South Sudan as a future hub for air connectivity across East and Central Africa.
