(JUBA) – South Sudan and Ethiopia are moving to strengthen their economic partnership through new infrastructure projects, banking collaboration and improved air transport. Talks held today between President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Ethiopian Special Envoy and Finance Minister Ahmed Shide Mohammed focused on boosting trade, investment and regional integration.
Minister Shide delivered a message from Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, explaining Ethiopia’s commitment to a closer partnership with South Sudan. Both leaders highlighted the importance of infrastructure, including roads, electricity transmission lines and telecommunications, to support economic growth.
In the banking sector, the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia plans to work with South Sudanese banks to strengthen local financial services. This collaboration aims to improve access to banking for businesses and citizens and support economic development.
Air transport was also discussed, with Ethiopian Airlines proposed as a partner to help develop South Sudan’s aviation services. The leaders also explored a trade and transport corridor linking South Sudan, Ethiopia and Djibouti. This corridor is expected to improve the movement of goods and regional trade.
