(JUBA) – South Sudan’s basketball fans were left disappointed as rookie Phoenix Suns center Khaman Maluach did not feature in the national team’s roster for AfroBasket 2025. The 18 year old, who many expected to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Bol Bol, missed an opportunity to gain international experience and contribute to his country’s campaign.
South Sudan, ranked among the top teams in the tournament, suffered an 88-80 defeat against Guinea, whose players shot 50 percent from three point range. Mamadi Diakite, a Suns affiliate, was perfect from beyond the arc with four successful three-point attempts. Analysts noted that Maluach could have offered defensive support, particularly around the paint.
It remains unclear why Maluach did not participate. Social media speculation suggested he might play, though no reliable sources confirmed this. The most likely explanation is that he remained in Phoenix to train with the Suns’ coaching staff. This decision aligns with the team’s preparation strategy but denies him the intensity and experience of competitive international play.
Other notable Suns players, including JT Thor, Marial Shayok, Bul Kuol, Sunday Dech, and Carlik Jones, are also absent from the South Sudan roster for AfroBasket. Wenyen Gabriel, however, remains on the team, potentially attracting the Suns’ attention as a future third center should the franchise trade Nick Richards.
Maluach’s presence at AfroBasket could have offered fans a closer look at his development, particularly on the defensive end. While the 18 year old has shown potential during Summer League appearances, he remains a raw prospect. His game currently focuses on rim protection rather than perimeter defence against three-point shooters, an area he might refine over time.
The Phoenix Suns’ recent acquisition of Mark Williams reflects the organisation’s assessment that Maluach still requires further development before assuming a more prominent role.
For now, fans will have to wait to see the young centre in a competitive international environment, as his professional growth continues in the NBA system.
