(BOR, JONGLEI STATE) – The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation has announced plans to establish the South Sudan National Water Institute to train professionals and promote innovation in water management.

Minister James Mawich Makuach revealed the plan during the official launch of the Bor Urban Water Supply System in Bor town on Wednesday.

The proposed institute will focus on capacity building, research, and technological innovation to strengthen water management systems across the country. It aims to ensure South Sudan invests wisely in developing and sustainably using its water resources.

“Water is life, and it knows no borders. There is no first, second, or third class when it comes to water consumption. The South Sudan National Water Institute will serve as a cornerstone for capacity building, research, and innovation in water management, ensuring that our country uses this vital resource wisely,” Minister Mawich said.

He also urged communities living in flood-prone areas to view water as a blessing rather than a challenge, encouraging residents to adapt to changing conditions and turn water shocks into opportunities for development.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to safe and clean water for all urban households. Despite South Sudan’s vast natural water resources, many communities face uneven and highly seasonal water availability, leaving them without reliable access to clean drinking water.

The National Water Institute is expected to provide specialised training to professionals, conduct research into sustainable water solutions, and support innovation in water management practices throughout South Sudan.
