(JUBA) – The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands has signed a six month partnership with Eye Media to support independent journalism and freedom of expression in South Sudan.
The agreement was formalised last Friday in Juba by Ambassador H.E. Paul Tholen and Eye Media’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Stephen Omiri.
The partnership aims to reinforce the role of independent media in fostering informed public debate, a core element of democratic society. According to Ambassador Tholen, the current media landscape in South Sudan requires strong support to ensure that citizens continue to receive accurate and objective information amid growing challenges.
In a brief statement during the signing, the ambassador emphasised that media freedom is central to Dutch foreign policy, particularly in countries undergoing political and social transition.
“Free media contributes to the free and open public debate, the backbone of democratic and inclusive societies,” Ambassador Tholen said. “The work of free media is essential for countering disinformation and ensuring citizens have access to credible information. The current situation in South Sudan calls for support to independent and objective journalism—now, more than ever.”
Eye Media is a leading media organisation in South Sudan, known for producing public interest programming on Eye Radio, civic education and reporting that focuses on peacebuilding, governance and social inclusion since 2003.
The six month agreement with the Dutch Embassy will focus on strengthening these efforts through financial and technical support, including training and public outreach.
Freedom of expression in South Sudan has remained under close watch from international observers. Global organisations have consistently called for increased protections for journalists and media institutions, especially in the leadup to national elections in 2026 and ongoing peace building efforts.
The Netherlands’ support follows similar contributions by other development partners working in the country to build capacity among local media houses.
Eye Media’s leadership expressed appreciation for the support and stressed their continued commitment to producing balanced and accurate reporting.
Through this partnership, the Dutch government intends to help reduce the spread of misinformation, promote transparency and contribute to a more informed citizenry.
The Embassy also sees this initiative as part of its long standing commitment to human rights, peace and inclusive development in South Sudan.
The financial value of the six-month partnership was not disclosed at the time of signing.
However, stakeholders expect measurable outcomes in terms of content production, civic engagement and resilience of local media houses by the end of the agreement period.
