(JUBA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit has been briefed on the resumption of oil and gas production at key oil fields and the payment of staff salary arrears at the national oil company, underlining the sector’s importance to South Sudan’s economy.
The briefing took place on January 14th, 2026, when the Managing Director of Nile Petroleum Corporation, Emmanuel Athiei Ayual, updated the President on operations at the Heglig and Baboo oil fields. The two fields are among the main sources of crude oil production that support government revenue and foreign exchange earnings.
In a statement to the media, Athiei said he informed the President that Nilepet had cleared three months of salary arrears owed to its employees. The move is expected to improve staff morale and support stability within the company at a time when the oil sector is seeking to increase output.
President Kiir reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting oil production as a key pillar for stabilising and growing the national economy. He noted that improved performance in the oil sector remains critical for public finances, service delivery, and broader economic recovery in South Sudan.
Nile Petroleum Corporation plays a central role in the country’s energy industry as South Sudan’s only national oil company. Its mandate covers oil exploration, production activities, and the management of revenues generated from the sector.
Oil income continues to be a major source of government funding, influencing budget planning and the ability to meet public sector obligations. Business analysts say consistent production and timely payment of workers are important signals for confidence in the sector, particularly for partners and service providers operating in South Sudan.
The latest briefing comes as the government seeks to strengthen oversight of strategic state owned enterprises and improve the contribution of the oil sector to economic stability and growth.
