(RUMBEK, LAKES STATE) – Farmers, government officials and UN agencies came together on Thursday in Rumbek to mark World Food Day with an exhibition of local produce, highlighting a collective effort to fight hunger and strengthen agriculture in Lakes State. The event took place at Rumbek Freedom Square under the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future.”
Onica Ayor Anyor Makuac, a farmer from Yirol East County, displayed her group’s products, including sorghum and groundnuts. She said showcasing local produce helps communities recognise the importance of cultivation and its role in improving livelihoods.
“Cultivation brings change. We can now send our children to school because of the food we grow,” Makuac said, urging the government and partners to provide more farming tools such as hoes and ox-plows.
Dhieu Makuac, a farmer from Wulu County, also presented his produce, including sweet potatoes, yams and groundnuts. He encouraged unemployed residents to take up farming as a source of income and food security.
Hannington Sebabduka, head of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) field office in Rumbek, highlighted the importance of partnerships in increasing agricultural productivity. He praised the collaboration with development partners including the World Food Programme, UNICEF and Plan International.
Poth Majak Daljang, Lakes State Minister of Agriculture, said the exhibition symbolised a shift from emergency aid to sustainable food production. He noted that farmers face challenges from climate change, including flooding and a shortage of tools, and called for continued support from donors and partners.
Stephen Mathiang Deng, state Minister of Cabinet Affairs, linked agricultural success to peace and stability in the region. “Without peace, farmers would not have this opportunity to achieve high-yield production,” he said, congratulating farmers for their hard work and contribution to local markets.
The exhibition showcased the potential of Lakes State’s agricultural sector and emphasised the need for continued investment in tools, training and market access to ensure sustainable food security and economic growth.
