(KIGALI, RWANDA) – South Sudan is taking steps to strengthen its statistical capacity through a new partnership with Rwanda. The Director General of the South Sudan National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) visited Kigali on January 12, 2026, meeting with Rwanda’s Director General of the National Institute of Statistics, Ivan Murenzi, and his deputy, Jean Claude Nyirimanzi.

The discussions focused on creating a strategic framework for bilateral cooperation. Rwanda, which has emerged as a regional leader in data and statistical services, will provide technical support to South Sudan across several key areas.

The partnership will focus on capacity building, with specialized training programmes for South Sudanese statisticians. It will also support the development of modern systems for data collection and processing, helping the NBS adopt advanced methods for real-time data analysis.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) will be enhanced, improving mapping for demographic and economic surveys. The collaboration will also refine sampling designs, aiming for high levels of data accuracy in line with international standards.

The NBS expressed gratitude for the warm reception in Kigali, calling the visit a milestone in the countries’ growing cooperation. Officials said the initiative is expected to improve data-driven decision-making in South Sudan, supporting national development efforts.

The Press Office of the National Bureau of Statistics said the partnership reflects South Sudan’s broader commitment to improving its statistical infrastructure, a key factor in planning economic and social policies, attracting investment, and monitoring national development goals.
