(HEGLIG) – The South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) have increased security around the Heglig oil fields as tensions rise along the Sudan–South Sudan border. Officials emphasised that South Sudan remains neutral in the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

Lt. Gen. Johnson Olony, SSPDF Assistant Chief for Mobilization and Disarmament, said troops have been placed on heightened alert to safeguard national borders and protect key installations. He stressed that South Sudan will not be drawn into the conflict but is taking precautionary measures to prevent any spillover of violence.

Gen. Olony confirmed that SSPDF forces recently disarmed Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) soldiers who crossed into South Sudanese territory. The SAF personnel are being sheltered on humanitarian grounds and will be moved to safer locations until arrangements can be made for their return.

SSPDF Chief of Staff Gen. Dr. Paul Nang is in the Ruweng Administrative Area supervising border operations. He is overseeing both the security measures and the reception of the SAF soldiers to ensure they are safely managed while remaining in South Sudan.

Authorities stated that these measures aim to stabilise the border area while maintaining South Sudan’s neutral position. The country continues to monitor developments closely and will respond to any threats that could endanger its citizens or critical infrastructure, including the Heglig oil fields, a key source of revenue.
