(JUBA) – The leadership of the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards has completed a series of management review meetings aimed at assessing institutional performance and setting priorities for the coming year, in a move that has implications for trade, consumer protection, and business confidence in South Sudan.

The meetings were held in Juba on 17 December 2025 and were led by the Executive Director, Hon. Gloria Nyoka. They brought together Directors and Directors General from across the institution to take stock of current activities and agree on practical steps to improve service delivery.

According to the Bureau, the main focus of the discussions was to review ongoing programmes, evaluate performance against set objectives, identify operational challenges, and ensure early and effective preparation for 2026. This approach reflects a growing emphasis on planning and coordination within public institutions that support the private sector.

Participants examined achievements recorded during the year, alongside gaps that continue to affect efficiency and reach. These included issues related to capacity, resources, and coordination across different Directorates. The consultations allowed for detailed exchanges on how to address these constraints while maintaining core regulatory functions.

The Bureau stated that the discussions also highlighted priority areas that require attention to better support trade and industry. As South Sudan seeks to increase domestic production and reduce reliance on imports, standards and quality assurance are increasingly viewed as essential tools for market access and competitiveness.

The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards reaffirmed its mandate to protect public health and safety through the development and enforcement of standards. It also underlined its role in facilitating trade by ensuring that goods produced or imported into the country meet agreed quality requirements.

Support to small and medium enterprises was identified as a continuing priority. The Bureau noted that many local businesses face challenges in meeting standards due to limited technical knowledge and resources. Through capacity building initiatives and technical training, the institution aims to help these enterprises comply with standards and participate more effectively in formal markets.

From a business perspective, improved standards enforcement is expected to enhance consumer trust and reduce the circulation of substandard goods. This, in turn, can contribute to a more stable trading environment, which is important for investment decisions in South Sudan’s developing economy.

The management review process is also intended to strengthen internal accountability within the Bureau. By assessing performance across Directorates, leadership aims to ensure that resources are used efficiently and aligned with national development priorities.

The Bureau indicated that outcomes from the meetings will inform its work plan for 2026. Early planning is expected to support smoother implementation of programmes and reduce delays that can affect businesses relying on timely certification and inspection services.
