(Juba) – The family of Mr Deng Mathiang Deng has confirmed that he is alive and receiving medical care after reportedly jumping from the third floor of a building at Jebel Suk in Juba on Saturday.

The incident which initially caused widespread concern on social media had led to premature rumours claiming his death. The family has since clarified that Mr Deng survived the fall and is currently in stable condition, with injuries primarily to one shoulder.

Mr Deng is a respected officer serving in South Sudan’s Immigration Department. He comes from Nyang Aher (Bulyom Boma) in Aweng Payam, Twic County, and is a married father of four. He is also the younger brother of Engineer Lok Mathiang Deng, a senior staff member at Sipet Oil Company.

In a statement released on Sunday, the family dismissed social media speculation suggesting that the incident was linked to financial stress or hunger. They emphasised that such claims were untrue and damaging, stating, “Mr Deng is a salaried government employee, and his family members hold senior, well paying positions. Linking this situation to poverty is irresponsible and misleading.”

The family explained that Mr Deng had been experiencing mental health difficulties, including anxiety and paranoia. They revealed that in the days leading up to the incident, he had spoken of fears that certain people he worked with were plotting against him.

Calling for sensitivity and compassion, the family said, “This incident should be approached with empathy, not mockery or misinformation.”

They urged members of the public and the media to avoid spreading unverified or harmful claims and instead focus on supporting Mr Deng during his recovery.

They also used the moment to encourage broader public awareness of mental health challenges, pointing out that psychological stress can affect individuals regardless of their social or economic status. The family has requested continued prayers and understanding as Mr Deng heals.

The statement was jointly issued by family members and the Twic Community in Juba.
