(JUBA) – The United States Government has extended its best wishes to the people of South Sudan as the country marks its Independence Day on July 9.
In a brief message posted on the US State Department’s official website, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed the strong and long standing relationship between the American and South Sudanese people. He acknowledged that this friendship began many years before South Sudan officially became independent in 2011.
“On behalf of the Government of the United States of America, I extend best wishes as the people of South Sudan mark their country’s independence day on July 9,” Secretary Rubio said.
He further emphasised the United States’ commitment to working alongside South Sudan to support efforts towards peace and development in the country.
“We look forward to continuing to work together to ensure a more peaceful and prosperous future that benefits the people of both our countries,” the message read.
The United States has been a key partner in South Sudan’s journey since independence, playing an important role in humanitarian assistance, development aid, peacebuilding and governance reform.
